In my last post on Tsukumonogatari, I forgot to mention one more feature of Majin-likes: the true ending is the only one worth getting. The so-so ending I got left a number of questions unanswered, a character I liked was killed off, the last boss came out of nowhere and then the game just kind of stopped. Like seriously? Dragon Shadow Spell is a strategy RPG from Flight Plan, better known as the developers of the Summon Night games until they went bankrupt in 2010. Dragon Shadow Spell was their first attempt at self-publishing a game, and I have long wanted to see what else Flight Plan could come up with apart from Summon Night. Now I’ve seen it and I’m quite underwhelmed, to tell the truth (disclaimer: I’ve only played 9 hours so far). Do please go on, this is most interesting
Happy New Year, everyone! I ate a lot! And drank a lot! And played a lot of videogames! And now it’s time for another round of Video Game Resolutions I Will Totally Not Keep!
Actually I did pretty well last year and tried almost all the games on my list. But there have been years where I didn’t play even 50%, and then there’s that time I said I would quit gaming by the end of 2014… Whatever happened to that resolution, huh? :-p So just take these with a pinch of salt and don’t expect too much. And of course, saying I like it when I’ve only played 5 hours means I’ve probably jinxed the game. Just like I jinxed Tokyo Majin Gakuen, a game Tsukumonogatari bears more than a passing resemblance to. In fact I have created a “Majin-like” genre in my mind that encompasses games such as these.
To qualify as a Majin-like, a game must have a ratio of 90% visual novel : 10% gameplay, its story must have a heavy supernatural/occult component and majority of the cast must be high school students who spend their days engaging in typical ‘wacky anime high school hijinks.’ Btw, although Persona/Shin Megami Tensei may have inspired Tokyo Majin, it doesn’t qualify under this criteria because for all their other flaws the SMT/Persona games do have a lot of gameplay.
