Back to Persona 2

Back to my roots~ Back to my roo-woo-woo-woo-woots~ It’s time to go back to… wait, where was I going again?

I totally forgot what I was supposed to do after beating the headmaster, and I didn’t want to check a FAQ. So I just spent several hours playing poker in the casino and doing a sidequest in the movie theater.

The sidequest was a little on the long drawn-out side, but the Demon Headmaster-like scenario was several shades more interesting than what’s currently going on in the game. I’m getting dizzy trying to keep up with all the rumors in Persona 2‘s main story, plus all that whining about which school badmouthed which is  childish and trivial beyond words. I’ll go back and play “part two” of the sidequest once I clear the dungeon I’m currently in.

The quest confirmed one thing for me though: Innocent Sin is the easiest jRPG ever made. Not the easiest Persona, not the easiest Atlus game. It’s the easiest RPG on Planet Earth. Ar Tonelico and Rhapsody DS are like The 7th Saga compared to this game. I’d challenge you to find an easier game, but then the universe would explode and I’d never be able to get this done.

In what other RPG can you go into a dungeon at level 6 armed only with your starting armor and personae, with 6 medicines and 1 antidote to your name, and curb-stomp enemies 3 or 4 times your level wit da greatest of ease? On the Hard setting, no less? Sure I was using the shockingly overpowered fusion spells, but in a normal RPG I wouldn’t even survive long enough to get one of those off. In IS, when an enemy manages to hit me for 10 damage I’m like “Whoa, he’s a strong one,” it’s that bad.

I’m kinda happy about this though, since it means I won’t have to grind. I just have to look into enemy repelling items so I can focus on where the story is going/not going. See you all in a couple of days.

I love P2, but you’re completely right on this point XDDD, the worst of all is that your SP regenerate REALLY fast, and spells like Media waste the same quantity as Dia, same goes for Maragi/Agi, or Agilao/Agi. WTF?! And then you pair a character with a low compatibility persona and, BAM! 24 SP for a ridiculous attack! WTF?!

I haven’t done the sidequests yet, because I begun with that of the “ambrosia” thing, but they spoke so much that I quit in 5 minutes XD I’ll have to try since that’s all the new content =__=

The Ambrosia dungeon story is really long. You can leave it till right before the last boss, it doesn’t make a difference. The advantage of doing it early was that those level 18-22 monsters were giving me far more Tarot cards than the level 3-6 monsters were giving out at the time. If you’re past that level, there’s no real advantage to doing it now.

Whoa!!, looks like the good stuff resides in the new content. In the Original psx version there are no rumors, no tarot cards and i think neither persona fusions. All these were Eternal Punisment’s innovations, also in battle you can form teams to trick demons to give tarot cards to you. part of this is why i like EP more, it gives variety to grinding. it lost its uniqueness 🙁

No rumors, no fusion spells, no tarot cards in the original? Are you serious? It’s hardly the same game without them.

I’m having second thoughts about going on to play EP, since it’s about Maya and I don’t particularly like her.

  3. liraman says:

Don’t worry about Maya, she’s mute this time and has zero personality (as far as silent protagonists get).
One thing i noticed is that the first game people play, is the game they prefer, i hate Ginko and the blue guy in IS, but fans love them.
I like Baofu, Ulala and Katsuya in EP they feel more mature, and about Maya, she is just there. I think i like EP more because it was my first MegaTen game (i played it in 2003)and i may be biased.
Also i’ve read somewhere that EP might not get a PSP remake. Your only option would be the PSX version, but if the gameplay is now the same, there is no reason to play it besides story. It’s harder though.

I welcome a harder game. Innocent Sin is fine as it is, but it does feel weird when Persona is that easy. I’ll put EP in the “maybe” category depending on how the rest of IS turns out.

I get what you mean about your first being your favorite. P3FES was my first and while I can admit it was flawed in a number of ways, it’s still number one for me.

Sorry, don’t take my word on inexistant rumors in the original, i might be totally wrong on this one. i only remebered that in EP they are integrated in gameplay such as in-shops content and hidden enemies. i really dont remember how they are implemented in IS besides story wise.

@liraman: I played the PSX version of IS not too long ago and in fact there ARE rumors, tarot cards and Persona fusions. Maybe there’s some new fusion spells or some new optional boss but I played both and I can say they are basically the same, except for the new arranged soundtrack and Game difficult setting. EP is a little different; less battle dialogue choices and you can turn off battle animations (which should have been included in the PSP version of IS), I can’t remember about rumors XD.

I played the Gemini traslation that came in 2009.I enjoyed the game but cant help but notice some minor things missing in regarding to EP. like spell combos, group conversations, persona mutations.
I admit that i’ve played those games long ago, so i must be wrong. in EP you collect a number of tarot cards to “buy” your personae. i just dont remember doing that in IS. And about rumors, guess they exist in both games, but i remembered to pay for some rumors to spread and immediate effect on stores and equipment resistances or better, to make demons spread rumors to find hidden areas in dungeons or to make some weapons super strong or weak. i dont remember such things in IS.
Then again i just played those games once and must admit they’re very good, but dont remember everything. Sorry if i am wrong, don’t take my claims too seriously.

In Kinas’s case the strong dislike towards the characters might end in to a dropped effort to finish the game after the “beloved” plot twist….

I’m sorry to brought that just promise that you’ll comment on how much you hated it.

  7. liraman says:

i remember now!!, its not that the spell combos were new, but you can give your party the order of actions that lead to the combos and save it into a list in EP, in IS you had to memorize the order to pull of the combo (hence they’re easier and not to elaborated) also in EP there were triple fusions…
i think i just quit saying random useless stuff.. i don’t want to mess with your experience with the game

  8. liraman says:

Uh oh! I’m sorry. i didn’t mean to. I used the word “beloved” cuz people love it, i really don’t remember exactly what was about, just remember hating it.

  9. AwesomeCurry says:

Oh, P2: IS. The final boss does single-digit damage to your MP on HARD MODE. In other words, free turns for you. The game will never get harder.

    • Kina says:

I’m lovin’ it. I just wish the enemies would realize how inferior they are and leave me alone. I finally got Estoma to keep the encounter rate down, but my level is very low because of all the negotiating I’ve been doing, so it doesn’t make much difference.
