Where to find all the Lineage Types and Butterflies in Stranger of Sword City

stranger of sword city black baron(Update March 22, 2021) Stranger of Sword City Revisited was released in English recently, but this FAQ was based on the original Japanese release from 2014, so it might not be accurate. In the same way, my walkthrough of Entaku no Seito, now released as Saviors of Sapphire Wings, is based on the PSP version and not the updated remake, so it might not be accurate. Follow this FAQ at your own risk!

I finally finished my barebones walkthrough of Entaku no Seito, a.k.a. Saviors of Sapphire Wings, which made me feel all dungeon-crawly, which reminded me that Stranger of Sword City came out in English recently on the Vita and XBox One (Update: I’m replaying it myself now, this is a good chance to check whether the FAQs were right).

Since it’s in English and since it’s much shorter and more straightforward than Entaku it doesn’t really need a FAQ, but I do remember having a hard time finding a few of the Lineage monsters in Sword City, so I thought I’d translate this Japanese guide to finding them all. I don’t know most of the English names of the monsters/levels, so I used my best guess in most cases. Please correct me if there are any mistakes.

Caution: Part of the fun of the game is hunting them all yourself, so only use this if you’re really stuck or frustrated. Big thanks to Twinkle for fact-checking and corrections.

Rotten World Tree Yggdria ★★★★★ Appears after you beat Jormungand and obtain the Oasis Origin item. Take the item with you as you explore underground. Whether he shows up as a random encounter or Ambush enemy depends on your version. In the PC version I ran into him just walking around the very first screen at X:10 Y:09. Another confirmed sighting in the south at X:09 Y:08.

Butterfly Spots & Nests

stranger of sword city fight butterflyStranger of Sword City has both butterfly spots, where one butterfly shows up from time to time, and butterfly nests which are ambush points where butterflies respawn endlessly. The latter make good EXP grinding spots. I did my first playthrough on the Beginner difficulty so I never needed to grind, but I can see the use. Here are where to find all the spots and nests in the game:

Butterfly Spots

They don’t always appear, and it takes a while for them to respawn once they do.

Wow this is amazing!! It will be out on vita on April 26th , only 16 more day and counting, so I will be using this guide for sure!

  2. Isleif says:

Thanks a lot for the translation! ^____^

I just preordered the game a couple of days ago and I can’t wait to play it! Hope you can get your paws on a Vita soon; this console is an absolute dungeon-crawler heaven!

    • Kina says:

I knoooow! I want Demon Gaze! And Operation Abyss! And Ray Gigant! And even Dungeon Travelers if I can get it really really cheap! Stranger of Sword City looks and sounds amazing but it’s lacking a bit when it comes to volume. Not that you should cancel your preorder or anything, but you might get a bit of a “That’s it?” feeling when it’s over. I know I did, anyway.

  3. kale says:

I have a question, about how many hours did it take you to finish this? How much shorter is it then children of the round? And lastly is this game VERY HARD, like excessively hard? Thanks

    • Kina says:

It took me 61 hours for the first playthrough, but I must note that I played very, very, very cautiously, retreating to save every few minutes. A braver player could finish it in half the time. I finished the main Entaku game in 49 hours, make of that what you will.

I played Stranger of Sword City on Beginner (Easy) mode, so it wasn’t hard. The early parts were a little challenging, after that it wasn’t bad. Of course you will still die a few times especially against bosses, but that’s business as usual for this kind of genre.

What’s more, there’s an item that lets you change difficulty on the fly, so you can start out on Beginner then switch to Normal when you’re feeling bolder. Or do the whole first playthrough on Beginner and switch to Normal for the next playthrough where you get to carry over all your weapons and levels and stuff.

For the record I played Students of the Round on the lowest difficulty as well, and I don’t think it affected my enjoyment any.

  4. Jennifer says:

Yaaaaaay! It’s finally out and I’m having a blast. Thanks for the guide it’s a really big help.

    • Kina says:

I’m replaying it and having a blast too. Just finished the second batch of dungeons, currently trying to hunt down two last lineages so I can move the story forward.

  5. Jennifer says:

    HAVE YOU SEEN THIS: http://gematsu.com/2016/05/new-interpretation-stranger-sword-city-announced-ps-vita

I hope it makes it over here!!!!!!

    • Kina says:

I saw it! I hope they make it available as DLC, would be a nice shot in the arm once the game gets stale. Stranger of Sword City definitely needs more volume, and this sounds like just the ticket.

  6. Vir says:

Having a hard time finding a ghost ship encounter. Spend a lot of time wandering mausoleum of the sea and hiding but no luck! You know of a specific floor it appears?

    • Kina says:

IIRC I found one at one of the ambush spots in the center of the sea Mausoleum, before you step into the warp point that takes you to depth 100 (the one you need the Symbol to step into). I haven’t seen any ghost ships deeper than that point.

      • Vir says:

Thanks for the reply, finally found one. I really like this game, only some Lineages left on Ark of Eternity. Although my level 38 party is getting slaughtered by critical hits fighting Tricolor, which is a bit unfair, but I guess ill have to grind some more (playing on normal). No saving in dungeons gives that extra challenge I used to love in oldskool rpg’s.

      • Vir says:

Managed to kill tricolor, assassination did the trick.

        • Kina says:

Assassination does trick for a lot of lineages. I stacked the front row with hidden ninjas and assassinated them to death.

  7. Kenny says:

Does the heart stone for “golden sorcerer knight” stay in your inventory if you leave the dungeon? If it does, then I might of accidentally sold it. On the other hand, if it disappears if you leave, then I just haven’t had the fortune to ambush it again.

    • Kina says:

It doesn’t disappear, so you must have sold it by accident, which is very easy to do. You’ll have to get it again, I’m afraid.

  8. dee says:

Can’t figure out how to get through the west gate of Black Shadow Town…

    • Kina says:

Search for hidden doors. That’s usually the problem in Valley of the Ruined. Here’s what my completed map of Black Shadow Town looks like, for comparison:
      Black Shadow Town
      Hope it helps!

      • Tee says:

        it does , thx 🙂

      • dee says:

Oh, thanks. I actually went back and looked at EVERY wall and found it…

On another note, how do you process in the Mausoleum of the Sea? I believe I’ve beaten 2 lineages… one being the Ghost Captain. I’m pretty sure I’ve killed dozens of Kraken, but no lineage too. Do I need to beat a certain number of lineages to progress to the next floor?

Also, how do I get back to the Ghost Town? It doesn’t show up as a place to travel…

Thanks for having all this info too. I’m hoping there’s some sort of FAQ/Walkthrough at some point. 🙂

        • Kina says:

I’m sure someone will make one. I know there’s a Wikia, but I don’t have the URL offhand.

Have you been to the lower depths (100, 500, 1000) or are you unable to progress deeper because the game says you need a “symbol”?

If the former, just keep exploring till you find the warp points that lead deeper down and eventually beat the boss at depth 1000. The sliding currents are annoying but you’ll make it through if you’re patient.

If it’s the latter and you need a symbol, make sure you’ve finished the Black Baron quest in the Mausoleum of Flames (beat the boss then report back to the Phoenix Squad) then talk to Helga at the palace. If she’s not showing up, give all the crystals you have to the vessels and something is bound to trigger.

I don’t have my game on me now, but the Ghost Town doesn’t show up on the same option as the Guild/Mausoleum of Metal. It will be one of the map options further down, possibly the one that says “Lower Section” or something like that.

  9. Bang says:

Hi guys, I need help… I am currently stuck at the Mausoleum of ice and there is no quest to do… Pls tell me what can I do?

    • Kina says:

Strictly speaking the Mausoleum of Ice is an optional dungeon. The story progresses when you give blood crystals to the vessels, so have you given all you have to the vessels or are you holding on to any?

If you have, the main story trigger at this point will be found from beating the boss (2-headed Nessie or Lilithma) in the Mausoleum of the Sea and watching the events that follow. After that you should go talk to Marilith at the Palace. She will tell you to go talk to Riu. Talk to Riu when you’re ready and she will take you to a new dungeon.

  10. Izuna says:

Man thank you very much for this guide,.. I´m at the beginning of the game. Cheap Master Thief was driving me mad, I couldn´t find him ( until i read your guide about the candy >_< lol.

  11. waddupitsme says:

Im on the pc version and i wonder how to actually get to 2-headed nessie i am at the sea cave (1000m) and explored but the only thing i found is 2 hiding zones and nothing else is there a hidden door somwhere? if so where is it?

    • Kina says:

There’s no hidden door. 2-Headed Nessie should be at X:11 Y:14 at 1000m. See the map below for details. If he’s not showing up, it might be a story trigger issue. Go talk to all the Vessels/give them all your crystals and come back and try again.
      Where to find 2-headed Nessie

      • waddupitsme says:

Okey! thanks so much for thelp! 🙂

      • Tali says:

Wondering if you can help me, too 🙂 2-Headed Nessie respawned but I can’t find it where I fought it the first time (for the story quest). Does it just become a random encounter when it respawns or am I missing something?

        • Kina says:

When monsters respawn they usually take over one of the warp stones (those floating things you touch that take you back to the Guild) in the stage. Check all the warp stones in the Mausoleum of the Sea and I’m sure you’ll find it.

  12. Eri says:

So I’ve beaten the game and returned the remaining Strangers back to their home. After that, I was back at Ark of Eternity and Dranserk/Toji asked me to gather the remaining Blood Crystals and give them to him. Unfortunately I didn’t remember where he said he would be waiting, so how do I find him?
Also, I can’t seem to find The White Palace. 🙁

    • Kina says:

He’ll be in the Ark of Eternity, the room with the entrances to the three towers you have to do together to unlock the last boss. He’ll be standing in the middle somewhere.
The White Place should be in the very bottom option (the one that says Upper Layer or something like that) when you go to the World Map.

  13. Woolf says:

for some reason the time burning dragon wont proc for me its supposed to intrude on every battle yet everybattle i defend for so long my 1 fighter ends up countering everything into oblivion

    • Kina says:

AFAIK there’s no special trigger to make Ol=Wyvern appear. He’s supposed to appear on the higher levels of each area, not the lower ones (try Area III and above, will update the FAQ to reflect that) so try waiting for him at the top. Apart from that there’s nothing else you need to do, just keep trying.

  14. Twinkle says:

    There is another Butterfly spot at Underground/new Ghost town 1F X: 01 Y: 10

But otherly seems you have almost all spots good job 😀

    • Kina says:

Added, thanks! This isn’t my original work, I just translated a Japanese FAQ. If you discover anything else, please let me know! Thank you!

      • Twinkle says:

I just started a new game since I had some troubles with the disorder warps (curse you phoenix :D) I try my best to find some more things so this blog can turn out super awesome, if there is anything you would like to see investigated, or cleared out, let me know and I will fix on (hopefully) a 100% anwser!

        • Twinkle says:

Another Butterflly spot (first time encountered here though) at Bottom of the Nest X: 08 Y: 10

          • Kina says:

Thanks a lot! Added. I’m doing a replay myself so I’ll try and check if there’s anything else the FAQs missed as well.

  15. Twinkle says:

    Updates :
Butterfly spot: Mausoleum of Ice – Temple of Giants X: 09 Y: 06
    Butterfly spot: Mausoleum of Ice – Dragon palace B X: 10 Y: 16

    Butterfly spot: Mausoleum of Storm – 5th floor X: 08 Y: 04
(Enter the hole on the 6th floor where you fought Heir of the Prideful)

    • Kina says:

Wow, thanks! I only just noticed the FAQ didn’t have an MoI section.

      • Twinkle says:

I was reading some Lineage encounters and some were a bit vague. It is still working but just a little more specific. *this is based on completing story line 3 times and atleasth 120+ hours of expertise*

*note* This is based from pc edition but shouldn’t differ that much in method.

Rotten World Tree Yggdria : Ambush at the marked area Mausoleum of Metal South X: 09 Y: 08 After obtained the Oasis Origin

Fire eating Bird Poiny Bell : Ambush at the ambush spot Firebird Lands X: 01 Y: 15

Scarlet Magician Le Musa : *little translation mistake or false noted* You end the Poison to Poison quest after the event with Rainaina at the elevator
So technically your still in the quest 😉 Method is correct. Slay Sword Excecutioner Ta Datoki and kill the 3 flies for the poiny powder.

Wandering Ghost Knight Murderall/Gaizel : To be more specific You only encounter him after a few turns if you battle a monster with the same afinity of Muderall/Gaizel. For example Familia (looks like purple lamita), cocoon, ghosts/wraith, hellhounds won’t trigger it. It must be one of the follow:
an Fight include Death Seeker, Skull Lord, Skull Cap, or skeletons. I tried stall like 30+ turn with those mentioned as not working and it was not
possible for me to trigger him. (or i jst had bad luck) but this method worked all my play throughs.

Wandering Man of the Sea Captain Ghost : will pop up after ambushing at the spot in Mausoleum of the Sea Sea Interior X: 04 Y: 15 in 3 turns from ghost ship.

White palace I will do some later :/

        • Twinkle says:

          Ark of Eternity:

          Butterfly spot: Mausoleum of Anti-Skill top floor X: 10 Y: 13

        • Kina says:

Thanks, I updated things to be more specific and added the coordinates where you fought stuff. I never noticed that about Murderall. In my second playthrough I killed/ran from everything so quickly I never realized he doesn’t show up for certain kinds of enemies.

  16. Cirilo says:

How to encounter Dou Baroque in White Kingdom ?

    • Kina says:

Beat enough Spriggans and you’ll encounter it in the ambush spots. I don’t know how many Spriggans count as “enough” though. Just keep fighting Spriggans.

  17. Twinkle says:

Wow nice sumary of my long rubbish of text 😀 seems more explicit now good job!

I am currently farming the last spots at ark for some S gears, I expect entering white palace and confirming the last Lineage requirements within an hour.

    • Twinkle says:

Ugh… I got baroque, but I still think there should be another factor then killing 75+ spriggans, back to an other safe and test again.

      • Kina says:

If there’s another requirement, I don’t know it. It might be total battles or total enemies killed in general, so it would be helpful if you could keep track of that as well.

    Butterfly spot: White palace – X: 10 Y: 17

I’m proud to tell you I found (maybe super coincidental) but it is too much confirmation at my side* The trigger of the Baroque (still not sure it has something to do with the Spriggans)

I confirmed this with 10x retreat from ambush and 5x reloading my game and it ALWAYS (failed 1x, to trigger first attempt) showed up on this specific spot White Palace – X: 03 Y: 01

If it might be a kill requirement the only difference this time is: I finished the rifts for Neo Escarion and 100+ god kills*

Please help, I can’t find Tyrant Chief.
After beating Guardian of the Deep Forest and saving, I tried to roam for a long while in the north forest but no avail (of course I gave him the Golden Liver).

Have you actually been told Tyrant Chief is available? Is he on your Wanted List? He doesn’t show up till a bit later. If he’s on your list, first you have to go back to his room in the Orc Village, talk to the orc there and pick up the remains of the Golden Liver you gave him. Once you do that, he should appear quite easily in the North forest, just keep touching the red encounter symbols.

“I did my first playthrough on the Beginner difficulty so I never needed to grind, but I can see the use.”

    BULLSHIT

You have next to no resources at the beginning, no equipment, no skills or only very few. There is no fucking way to survive the first couple bosses without doing some grinding, even on beginner.

    • Kina says:

You think I’m lying? It’s been years since I played Stranger of Sword City, but I’m quite certain I didn’t grind. I low-key hate grinding so I would remember if I did.

But just to make sure we’re on the same page, when I say “grinding,” I’m talking around looking for battles so you can level up/get loot and get stronger, spawn camping nests and treasure points etc., at the expense of game progression. I played the game 1.5 times and I’m positive I did very little of that, no matter what kind of animal excrement you declare.

Although I’ve chronicled Butterfly Nest locations in this post, I definitely didn’t grind butterflies either, especially once I found out where they came from.

      What I did do was:
      – warp out frequently to save (so I ended up doing each dungeon at least twice, which you might call grinding?)
      – hit each treasure point at least twice to get good equipment (standard gameplay and what you’re meant to do IMO, but you might call this grinding?)
      – die quite a bit.

Believe me, or don’t believe me. I’m fine either way.

Nephilim – o.O I was just gonna fill up the map before fighting any red symbol and he showed up on my first encounter at X:14 Y:16. I guess it’s just luck instead of needing to defeat x number of cyclops.

Also, thanks for your guide =)
