Playing Shin Megami Tensei IV

Yeah, I know I said I was going to play Izuna 2 last time, but then I came over all turn-based-ish and SMT-ish and one thing led to another and here we are! My latest save file reads 24:54:32, MC Flynn is at level 37. I just entered Shinjuku National Park after the execution (that should be vague and non-spoilery enough, right?). Unfortunately I’m really busy this week so I don’t have the energy to write anything long about Shin Megami Tensei IV right now.

There’s nothing to write about anyway, because gameplay-wise I’m just playing on Easy and steamrolling everything in my path with Blight/Megaton Press, whichever appeals to me more that day. Here are my Flynn’s current stats and crop of demons:

smtiv flynn stats tehvidya(If anyone knows a way to take better 3DS screenshots besides getting a phone with a better camera, I’m all ears.)

On odd-numbered level ups, I put all 5 points into Dex. On even ones I give each stat 1 point. I’m focusing on Dex because Charge+Tathlum Shot is my preferred way of taking bosses down, plus Dex also helps with other physical skills like the aforementioned Megaton Press. Or so the game claims, anyway.

I have a lot of incenses so I use them as a handy elixir whenever his MP runs low. I got lost a lot in Tokyo so I’m probably way overleveled to boot. Sometimes I feel like ramping up the difficulty to Normal (Prentice), especially when bosses with heavy build up drop dead in two or three turns. But then I get lost somewhere and have to fight a lot of weak enemies and then I realize Easy is the fastest way to go. Maybe I’ll take to switching just for boss fights, we’ll see.

The story hasn’t gotten going either. About 15 of those 24 hours I’ve played have been spent on the same long drawn-out quest which only just ended. I’m looking forward to finally getting some answers out of someone sooner rather than later, but then again I don’t have any questions I really need answering. Like, the game hasn’t even progressed to the point where there are questions, you know? Anyway, for now I’ll just content myself with getting lost in Tokyo ad wiping out weak mobs. From the fact that the Terminal list is only half full and the fact that I only just got Mediarama, I surmise I’m about 50-60% done. I’ve hit the “Really want this to be over soon” point already, but I’ve come this far so I might as well see it through.

Hopefully I’ll have time for a longer, more detailed review by the time I’m done.

Ohhh… SMT IV!! I bought a New 3DS a few months ago and I bought the game (digital edition because I live in Europe and Europe is a sad place to live if you are a SMT fan) and I felt a little dissappointed. The beginning is VERY hard, but after your first trip to Naraku, everything becomes veeeeeeeeeeeeeery easy, and stays like that for all the game. Dungeons are dangerously simple (WHERE ARE THE MAZES?) and I ended up wishing I bought Strange Journey instead because my lv38 Flynn after 22h of game can just wipe out anything in the screen. I even beat a lv 70-something optional boss way earlier in the game. It has gotten quite… boring.

And, like you, I’ve been getting lost at Tokyo (a lot!) and there are too many easy demons in not-random-yet-very-annoying-battles, so I’ve abandoned this for a month or two and, with Metal Gear Solid V, who knows when will I get back to it…

Yeah, I switched to Easy because the Naraku demons were wiping me out in two hits, but now no one can stand up to Flynn’s might. Guess I’ll be switching back to Prentice. It’s cool we’re around the same level ^_^ I played and almost finished Strange Journey, but I think I like this one a little better. And there’s nothing else I’d rather be playing right now, so I’m going to finish it. I hope.

SMT4 is kind of frustating because when you start the game you can easily get killed in 2-3 hits but after a while you become so strong the fight just become incredibly boring, even on normal, by now you are probably strong enough to bump the difficulty up if you feel like it

i think the tipping point is when you learn the “karn” spell that let you bounce attack from enemies at which point it’s really just a matter of spamming them over and over and watching boss punch themself in the face like a bunch of idiots

also you probably fucked up already, there is more game if you go for the neutral ending and you also get to fight both final bosses from the law and chaos ending but the game is so picky that even by following a guide i ended up getting the law ending just because i missed a step

I bumped the difficulty up, then bumped it down again. On Normal enemy DEF and AGI go up so enemies dodge more often and take less damage. But you get the same EXP and items anyway, so you’re just prolonging the torture but getting nothing from it.
I seem to be on the verge of getting locked into a route now (just finished Shene Duque). If I get Law I will quit.
