Okay, so I started Granblue Fantasy

granblue fantasyBecause I said I would, and because there’s a joint event with Sakura Taisen going on. Said joint event is really boring, so I just grabbed Sakura and got out of there. I’d rather play the real thing if it’s all the same to you. The fun in ST is watching all the different characters play off each other, and you don’t really get that here.

But I digress. So I started Granblue Fantasy two or three days ago. I skimmed briefly through the guide teasel sent me, but I really prefer to play games blind where I can. The way I see it, if I can’t figure the game out just by playing it, then it’s the game’s fault, not mine. So far it’s easy enough to understand. Grind for rupees, grind for crystals, grind for uncapping items, grind for weapons, grind grind grind. It’s not that different from other free-to-play browser games, just with nicer music and graphics. Also there’s a story in there somewhere. I like stories, even done-to-death “Mysterious girl with mysterious powers and the valiant hero who throws everything away to follow her to the ends of the earth” stories like this one.

granblue fantasy2Right now I’m not sure how long or how seriously I’ll be playing Granblue Fantasy. I don’t find the battle system all that exciting, and all the limit breaking and upgrading and uncapping and class leveling sounds like a massive pain in the glutes. I’m only at Rank 13 right now so AP refills easily, but I’m soon going to run into the old “Play 5 minutes, Wait 5 hours” issue that characterizes most free-to-play games, at which point I’ll either stop completely or just log in a few times a week.

Because of that I’m a little hesitant to join a crew (a guild by any other name) even though that option just opened up to me a few minutes ago. I’ll see how far I can go crew-free for now. If I play another couple of days and get more excited about the game somehow then I’ll think about taking things to the next level. I really should finish Sakura Taisen 3 and Stranger of Sword City this week so I can move on to other ‘proper’ games.

I hgate when you have to wait to play, I did play many games like that, but you can’t really enjoy the game 🙁

BUT nonetheless, I hope you’re having fun!

That’s the end goal of every game, doesn’t it?

It’s okay, I guess. There’s just too much to do and too little AP to do it with and too much loading and too many buttons and options and stuff. I don’t know if I’d call that “having fun” but I don’t feel like quitting just yet.

later when you reach chapter 8 in the game you unlock a casino just like ye olde rpg, you can play poker on the casino to buy items that give you free AP, to be honest it’s really easy to stock and keep playing even after running out, if you have a twitter account you can also annoy people once a day and you get a free bar refill, there is also co-op mode which let you play without using your AP

anyway, yeah it’s a grinding game, after you reach rank 30 you will unlock a series of super powerfull bosses that can be fought with other player and the easiest way to get stronger is to grind them until they drop the good stuff, it can get a little soul crushing when they just refuses to drop the item you need

i have lot of patience for grinding and i really love the art and music so personaly i’m enjoying myself a lot but i could see why someone would just find the game a chore

one last thing, you get more character by rolling with the “draw” menu, if you draw at the end of the month you have higher chance to get rarer (and therefore stronger) characters so you should wait to try to get more character until that happens

If you mean LegFes, that just makes a 3% SSR chance into 6%, hardly worth the wait. Especially with my bad luck at lotteries. I enjoy the raids, though I have to do them when most Japanese players are asleep, otherwise they vanish in a flash. If more raids will open up at level 30 then I’ll definitely keep playing till then.

Do you know any good raiding crews?

      • teasel says:

actualy i made my own crew when i started playing, but we are already full so i can’t invite you at the moment, maybe later if you decide to stick with the game

if you have to find a crew, you should do it now because right after the sakura wars event ends, a new event called guild war starts, in guild war each guild has to score as much as possible by punching the shit out of a certain boss monster and the one that score the most gets pretty big prize (you can find more in the guide i linked)

as such all the guild related feature are closed off when a guild war starts, so you would have then to wait for GW to end

biggest advantage of joining a crew are the crew skills anyway, people donate rupee to the crew and then the people that manage the crew can buy some buff for everyone that joined like having 2 free green potion each fight or having increased drop rates

i forgot to add, the reason raids vanish in a flash at the moment is because we are having a special event where every raid is half the cost, so everyone runs out of resource to run raids much much slower

        • Kina says:

Oh, I see. I’d better join something then. Would be annoying if I changed my mind about joining a crew but got stuck because of the event. Thanks for the tip!

I kind of find the point where you aren’t leveling up after 2 or 3 battles to be around the mid 20s, although that might be a bit skewed with the EXP boost going on.

Personally in between Co-Op missions (no cost if you join someone else rooms, I think), Raid and “normal” missions, I actually feel more that I have an abundance of things to do.

Also I was dumb enough to try to farm for Erica and did manage to accomplish it like 2 days ago – and then suspiciously the item that is needed to trade in for their SSR weapons suddenly dry up… or is it just bizarre luck?

    • Kina says:

Nah, I bet they tweaked the drop rate ‘cos people were finding it too easy. Can’t make money from an easy game.

And yeah, there’s still plenty to do even though I’m past level 30. I haven’t even had time do to much co-oping ‘cos I’m taking advantage of the half AP event to do as much of the story as I can. Also taking advantage of half EP to join Omega raids. I just got my first SSR weapon drop, YAY!

    • teasel says:

items have different rarities, from most common to least common it’s old stake -> spirit gem -> satan headband -> superb spirit droplet

even playing on extreme (the 3rd difficulty out of 4) i always get at best 2 spirit gem and 2 spirit droplet per run

kina – you should always do at least 5 co-op game each day, it gives you point that you can use to buy stuff from a special shop including free gacha pulls and free mats, after you buy everything in that shop, it resets

also regards the SSR drop, unless it comes with attack large, it’s trash (with the only exception being the tiamat gun which comes with attack medium + enmity small) still keep it because it can be used to skill up your more usefull stuff

      • Kina says:

I only have junk R weapons and two SRs. I’m keeping that baby till I get something better. In other news, I just picked up an SSR summon! Whee! ^_^ Omega raids are the best!
Hear ya on the co-ops. I’ll do them when the half AP event runs out.
