Ill with the flu

  1. Massive headache. Sore throat. Stiff neck. Chills. I feel rotten. Will update properly as soon as I can look at a screen without wincing, God willing.

Please take care. A headache combined with a stiff neck are symptoms of meningitis. If you know what caused your neck pain, feel free to disregard this paranoia. Feel better!

Thanks. I was worried about the same thing but I didn’t have any nausea or confusion or rashes so I took my chances (this is a bad idea, btw. Don’t do as I do). I’m happy to report I feel much better today 🙂

Yoooooooo, I finally beat the first Sakura Wars! It took me a long time because I didn’t have uninterrupted periods of playing until recently.

Anyway my kind of basic summary is that I felt like the gameplay parts were actively trying to stop me from liking the game and I basically dreaded having to do them because they were kinda slow and boring – the way the units move with the CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK slowness is cool, but by the time you watch everyone move and take their turns you could probably raise up several grandchildren and send them to college.

(Makes me think about the irony of whether I would hate Tristia if it did include a lot of forced battles)

Like, simple is one thing, but it felt like it could really do something a bit more interesting than send waves of palette swap enemies at you and at worst, be actively annoying (like the Ice boss near the end, who cheats by being able to move, attack, then run away from you)

The Windows version that I played unfortunately kinda seems to crash a lot, which didn’t really help my opinion of it. Inevitably it also seems to enjoy picking when I almost won the battle to do so, which yes, is pretty anger inducing.

Anyway – on the rest of the game that isn’t gameplay related – fairly decent, though character design and plot does feel a bit “stock” to me today, they tend to play off each other well enough. Background Music could probably be a bit stronger.

Favourite character – Ayame, but welp. If I had to choose an actual heroine, I guess Sumire but it’s by a really narrow margin with Sakura on the bottom also by a narrow margin just because I never like it when one girl is clearly singled out as the “main” one and gets extra attention.

tl;dr – Really just want to experience the VN parts and not the battles but Youtube is a bit impersonal.

So at some point of time I guess I’ll move on to the future games in the series – to be honest, I would rather maybe jump to ST3 because I hear they change the engine there, but I heard the ST series also has save game import, so I’m in between a rock and a hard place.

Congratulations! My favorite girl was Ayame too but, yeah, you know how it goes. The combat system is much smoother and almost enjoyable in ST3 but it will never be a game you play for the battles instead of for the pretty gurls.

The interactions in all the games are very “anime” for what it’s worth, but I enjoy watching a more sober, mature Oogami dealing with friendlier, more stable ladies in later installments. I hope you will try the other games soon.

I wanted to play ST4 this year but one thing led to another and… where did 2017 go?!!!

That’s honestly the reason why I have such a hard time to go for more than one girl in Sakura Taisen. I’m fine with there being like one or two battles to spice up the chapters. But the final ones usually tip the VN to SRPG part’s 80:20 ratio on the head. I’m so sick and tired of these battles by the time I reach the end, I just can’t be bothered to play them over from the waifu decission point.

Same here, that’s why I’ve played each one only once so far. Maybe when I finish ST5 I’ll feel like starting over with a different girl each time. Huge maybe.
