kiniro no corda cover10. La Corda d’Oro/Kiniro no Corda
Japanese: 金色のコルダ
Developer/Publisher: Koei
Story: One of my favorite otome games, even though I just played it recently. The main character is roped into entering a musical contest because she sees a fairy at school. The only problem is she doesn’t have a lick of musical talent. But the fairy is kind enough to give her a magical violin that almost plays itself, leaving her to devote most of her attention to chasing bishies!
Gameplay details: Instead of grinding up your own stats, you grind up the stats of the musical piece you’re trying to perform. First you find the piece, then you practice till you can play it, then you practice some more until you can interpret it just right. Playing your song near a bishie will make him like you more, and you can also play duets, trios and quartets with people around you. It’s tremendously fun.

kiniro no corda 2 encore11. La Corda d’Oro/Kiniro no Corda 2
Japanese: 金色のコルダ2
Developer/Publisher: Koei
Story: The stage is Seisou High School, five months after the previous title. The main character plans to hold an ensemble concert with her friends. The main goal for this title is to express “the power of friendship and trust” which can be found in music.
Gameplay details: Same as the previous but simplified (tch!) with fewer stats for the MC and fewer requirements to learn a song. An Easy setting has also been added. Ensembles are no longer optional but are required to win the game, so the MC has to form a team, assign them pieces and make them practice until they’re good enough. During the daytime there’s an extra lunch period for more character events.

kiniro no corda 3 cover12. La Corda d’Oro/Kiniro no Corda 3

Story: 8 years after the adventures of Hino Kahoko, it is now time for Kohinata Kanade to step on the stage. Soon after transferring to Seiso Academy, Kanade finds the orchestra club in the middle of preparing for the National Ensemble contest. Teaming up with the other members, she will improve her skills, meet new rivals and create memories for what will become an unforgettable summer… [The “Another Sky” games are all fandiscs.]
Gameplay details: Same as the previous games with some changes. For example you can make lunches for guys. The tournament concerts also play around rather differently with a new “Maestro Field” feature. Instead of just watching, you actually have to press buttons in time with the music, so it’s more of a rhythm game now.

In their world, everyone belongs to one of six elements, but preliminary tests show Lulu doesn’t have an element at all. Not to worry though, hanging out with someone long enough naturally dyes you in their colors. Now Lulu has six months to find an element while raising her INT, DEX and MP stats, or her magic will be sealed forever.
Gameplay details: Daily schedule. Raise your stats by studying with guys and with your teachers every day. Occasionally get to go to town and do some shopping, not very interesting. wand of fortune 2 cover29. Wand of Fortune 2 ~Jikuu ni Shizumu Mokushiroku~
Japanese: ワンド オブ フォーチュン 2 ~時空に沈む黙示録~
Developer/Publisher: Otomate / Idea Factory
Story: Lulu might have gotten a partner who can help her control her magic, but it doesn’t mean that her magic stopped malfunctioning. This time the magicians are blown off to a world 350 years before their time. With new spells, new crises, and new boys, Wand of Fortune 2 continues the fantasy.
Gameplay details: Simplified gameplay compared to the original but with a more serious story. Lulu needs to repair her broken staff so she can return to her original world. To do this she needs to make medium stones for all the element. Go out hunting for raw materials (automatic, no real gameplay involved) then get a guy to help you make stones. You can synthesize other items as well.

Nice. My favorite sort of otome game. I think TMGS1 was responsible for that, since it was one of the first I ever played. I like VNs too, but I’ll always prefer feeling like I’m actually playing a game.

Have you ever tried any of the Winter Wolves stuff? I’ve eyed them time and again, but haven’t taken the plunge yet. The only OEL otome-ish games I’ve tried so far have been from Hanako Games.

It’s my favorite kind too, but mainly because the RPG-kind are so rarely done well. Plus stat games tend to be short and easy to replay so you can blaze through 5 routes without thinking about it.

With Winter Wolves I’m most interested in trying their not-quite-otome games like Heileen. Nothing against their otomes but the guys just don’t attract me. Like you I haven’t taken the plunge yet but I probably will, soon.

Yeah, I believe the only otome RPG I’ve played so far is Neo Angelique. Suffering through brain cell-killingly easy battles only to somehow screw up hooking up with Rayne at the very end made me ragequit and I never tried a second playthough. I know they’re making these with the intent that otome gamers who play nothing BUT otome games get some genre variety, but they’re just insulting for anyone who also plays other games already. If there’s not a difficulty choice, I’d just rather play a regular RPG.

Even when there is a difficulty choice, it’s usually just for show. I played Harutoki 3 on “Hard” but you could have fooled me! But the one otome game which has tough battles (Ururun Quest Koiyuuki) was panned by gamers for that very reason, so I’m not surprised developers backed away.

LOL the ones in the pic, they look like they’re in pain.

are they supposed to be kissing each other?.

maybe its due a cultural matter, as for me, we would be salivating all over, close hugging and with perverted faces, y´know, usual stuff.

ROFL, you’re so mean. The poor artist did his best to make it look romantic with the sunset and everything, but now I can’t unsee the ‘they’re in pain’ concept XDDD
